A vital lifeline as winter approaches
“A vital lifeline as winter approaches” –
Caritas welcomes emergency sleeping pods
Caritas is pleased to announce the arrival of two emergency sleeping pods, delivered from the
UK by Amazing Grace Spaces and due to be installed at the Vale Douzaine Rooms on Tuesday
18th November 2025.
These innovative pods are designed to provide safe, short-term emergency accommodation for
islanders experiencing homelessness. Caritas will now work to make them available at the
earliest opportunity, ensuring they can be used by those in need as winter approaches.
The project has been made possible thanks to generous support from Northern Trust, who
contributed towards the cost of purchasing and shipping the pods, and the valued cooperation
of the Vale Douzaine, who have allowed the pods to be sited at the Douzaine Rooms.
Graham Merfield, Chair of Caritas, said:
“This is a hugely important moment for us as we take another step towards offering practical
help to people without secure accommodation in Guernsey. The pods are not a final answer to
homelessness, but they will provide immediate shelter and dignity in times of crisis. We are
deeply grateful to Northern Trust, the Vale Douzaine and Amazing Grace Spaces for their
support in making this possible.”
Dave Sauvarin, Head of Channel Islands at Northern Trust added:
“We are pleased to support this important community initiative. Providing safe spaces for those
in urgent need reflects our commitment to making a positive difference where we live and work.
We commend Caritas for their vision and dedication in bringing this project to life.”
Caritas is now preparing the pods for use and will work closely with volunteers, partners and
support services to ensure they are safe, welcoming, and ready to provide a vital lifeline to
islanders in need. Individuals or organisations who wish to help can get involved by volunteering
(volunteer@caritas.org.gg) or by supporting through business and partnership opportunities
(office@caritas.org.gg).

About Caritas
At Caritas, our mission is to restore dignity and foster community for those most vulnerable in
Guernsey. As a charity rooted in compassion, our primary goal is to eliminate homelessness
and address social exclusion. We understand the profound challenges faced by those who
suddenly find themselves without a home due to unforeseen circumstances — whether through
job loss, separation, illness, or addiction. In a time of housing scarcity, we strive to ensure that
every islander has a safe place to rebuild their lives and regain their sense of self-worth.
